I Love Autumn Best

Dear Reader,

I have always loved Autumn the best. Growing up, we called it Fall, but calling it Autumn makes it even more special. I love the cooling off and the variability of weather and temperatures. I live in a region with only mild changes from season to season that would have some of you scoff and query whether we even have seasons, but trust me, a sensitive nervous system knows.

My sensitivity makes me finely tuned to my environment, and nature is the environment I prefer. Autumn is just more friendly and inviting. The cool air fills my lungs without causing any seasonal allergies, so I can breathe deeply. And I like waking up in the morning and grabbing a sweatshirt to keep me warm and comfy.

Though only a few trees change their leaves where I live, I travel to some other places where I love this time of year: Oklahoma, which is Home with a capital H, or New England, famous for its autumn, and now home of my son.

This time of year also brings with it a few challenges:

The days are getting shorter, and time in the sun and in nature becomes more challenging. We might have to change everything to be sure to be outside in the daytime more. A more depressed mood can sneak up on us, and even seasonal affective disorder (SAD) can grab us and pull us down.

And if you live with Daylight Savings Time, that’s a big shocker when it goes. It ends in the US on Nov. 1, 2026, the night of Halloween/Samhain. (Europe is a little different, changing on Oct. 25, 2026.)

For families, autumn brings another whole layer of change. Kids are settling into school, schedules get fuller, expectations increase, and parents are often trying to hold all the pieces together. Sensitive kids and sensitive parents can feel these transitions especially deeply.

You’ll be hearing a lot more from me about parenting this fall. Supporting parents and their sensitive kids has always been an important part of my work, and I’m shifting more of my focus toward parent coaching through this fall season. In 2027, I’ll be going full blast with that focus. There is so much I want to share with parents about understanding sensitive nervous systems, navigating family life, and helping our kids grow without losing ourselves in the process.

And, as always, you can bring your parenting questions, family dilemmas, relationship questions, or whatever else life is handing you to Office Hours.

Dear Reader, Perhaps one of the most mysterious quandaries is our human journey and how we navigate aging. Elaine Aron's recent book on spirituality explored many aspects of awakening and enlightenment through the lifespan. Pema Chodron has recently been speaking on the lessons and mission of later life, and now we have the new book by Sister Joan, another wise teacher. Join me as I facilitate the new series, Wisdom and Wonder, on the first Sunday of each month, 9am PDT and Noon EDT. We will...

Dear Reader,Drop and give me 10 SQUATS!Why? I’m sure you have heard that we need to do 100 squats a day to age well and live well regardless of our age. 100 feels like A LOT.
